About The Cranbourne Golf Club

The Cranbourne Country Club Founders created a golf sanctuary with outstanding ethical behaviour. However, they had no idea how to build a golf course. It is remarkable that their creation, the Cranbourne golf course, became listed in Australia’s top 100 courses.

The flat and uninviting land at Cranbourne was purchased because it was the right size at the right price. Experienced golf course architect Sam Berriman’s design inspired Australia’s greatest golfer, Peter Thomson, to claim the course ‘worthy of any major championship’. Many national and international professional golfers described the course as a ‘hidden gem’.

CGC began its existence with 249 Founding members, all of them Jews. The first person to subsequently join up
was a gentile, the first of thousands of non-Jewish members. A number have been elected to Honorary Life
Membership, such has been their contribution to the Club’s welfare and progress.

The committees during the Golf Club’s almost 73 years of existence faced numerous problems. Uppermost were a
lack of a quality water supply, and low membership numbers. In recent years a more enlightened attitude to
membership amongst Melbourne’s golf clubs and the unpredictable trip along the Monash freeway have
impacted membership numbers, making it even more difficult to ‘balance the books.’ The Golf Club and course
continued to function at full and outstanding capacity right up to the sale and closure in February 2026.

Through all the trials and tribulations, the Club never lost sight of its raison d’etre, to not exclude any golfer because
of colour, race or religion.
